One of the big advantages of the WASP sander is that you can choose from a wide variety of different drums to suit your work - all using the same standard belts that you can buy in any hardware shop. Choose a small diameter drum if you need to sand up into a tight corner - choose a bigger diameter for a larger radius curve. You can purchase an Accessories Kit for the WASP that contains 3 extra drums but workshop enthusiasts often prefer to make their own - here's how:-
You need a piece of scrap timber 100 mm long & some Bright Mild Steel Rod 85 mm long - 12 mm DIA is suitable but other sizes are OK.
Prepare your steel rod by filing a flat or a series of notches. This gives something for the adhesive to grip.
Drill a hole into your piece of wood to a depth of 50 mm. Use a drill size to give an easy fit. Too tight a fit will not allow enough adhesive in the joint.
Mix some epoxy resin and glue the steel rod into the wood block.
When the adhesive has cured grip the rod in a chuck in your lathe and turn your drum to the required diameter. BE SURE to make your drum parallel or the sanding belt won't track properly.
