Fixed Radius Curved Sanding Blocks

In column No. 9 we looked at the adjustable curved sanding plate - very useful for those large radius curves commonly encountered in cabinet making and boat building. This is achieved by using the ‘Camber Clip' attached to the flat sanding plate.clip-assy02.gif

There is a limit however to how far this plate can be pushed out before the drums come into contact with the curved sanding plate.

Here is another idea which overcomes that limitation and provides a fixed radius sanding surface. This can be very useful for those jobs that you know you will be revisiting often.

This is also very useful when doing production runs where you need to get all pieces identical.

Interchangeable curved blocks that have a more pronounced radius but are shorter - to avoid fouling the two drums - are attached to a base board by some convenient means - a piece of steel angle in this example.

Wrap some slippery sheet metal such as ‘Zincalume' around the curve to reduce friction.

Make a collection of blocks with different shapes to suit a variety of curves.

The base board can be clamped onto the drill table using a ‘G' clamp - or you can use the hexagon head bolt and hand nut supplied with the WASP's flat sanding plate. Here the hex head is shown recessed into the board to keep the work area clear. The extra work platform covering this bolt, shown in the top photo, is optional.
